UPDATED: Truck Returns From Pickett Fire

Updated 9 a.m. Sept. 2: The 51�ԹϺ�� Davis Fire Department personnel aboard Brush Truck 34 returned to campus Monday (Sept. 1) because of a mechanical issue with the truck, Fire Chief Nate Hartinger said. Four staff members had been deployed aboard the truck to the Pickett Fire in Napa County.

The captain serving as a strike team leader trainee remains deployed to the fire response.

The University of California, Davis, has received accolades for its research, the value for the dollar and the social mobility it offers graduates in three separate rankings published this month.

Forbes named 51�ԹϺ�� Davis to its Top 25 Public Colleges in the nation in rankings released Tuesday (Aug. 26). The magazine noted that 51�ԹϺ�� Davis students graduate with a median of $11,000 in debt — the lowest among the public standouts.

51�ԹϺ�� Davis Sees Jump in Records of Invention, Driven by Health Innovation

51�ԹϺ�� Davis has experienced a surge in records of invention (ROIs), marking a strong rebound in research innovation. The university filed 191 ROIs in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2025, up from 140 the prior year, a 36% increase that reverses a multiyear decline dating back to fiscal 2021.

An ROI is a confidential university document used to formally capture an invention, its details and inventors, serving as the initial step in evaluating the potential for patentability and commercialization. On average, anywhere from 10% to 25% of ROIs eventually become patents.
