11 Join the Ranks of Hellman Fellows

Eleven faculty members are receiving support for their work through this year’s Hellman Fellowships, and it comes right when they need it most: early in their careers.

“It can be immensely helpful to provide direct research funding to faculty members after their second or third year, when their work is ramping up but initial funding is running out,” said Phil Kass, vice provost of Academic Affairs. “This support helps provide a boost for their work and is vital in securing external funding.”

Grants this year range from $15,000 to $40,000, for a total of $320,000 awarded.

Newest Hellman Fellows Have Wide Range of Expertise

The work of 12 early-career faculty members will get a boost as this year’s class of Hellman Fellows. They will receive grants ranging from $16,000 to $49,000, for a total of $330,000 awarded.

Their work covers a wide range of topics, from the educational experiences of Venezuelan immigrants to a wireless device that monitors for seizures.

A dozen early-career faculty members at 51�ԹϺ�� Davis have been named to this year’s Hellman Fellowship, a program to help propel their work to the next level.

Academic Affairs Vice Provost Phil Kass recently named 51�ԹϺ�� Davis’ 11th class of Hellman Fellows: 11 assistant professors who received a total of $244,000 in grants for research in a wide range of disciplines.

In engineering, for example, Seongkyu Lee is researching the noise generated by electrical vertical aircraft, a mode of transportation he calls transformative and an enhancement to human life. He is working toward “quiet” operation as a way to “increase public acceptance of small-sized urban aircraft flying in heavily populated cities.”
