When the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus was discovered on a poultry farm in Asia in 1996, there was little indication that it would become so widespread and so destructive. Within 30 years, it reached every continental region except Oceania, infecting more than 400 million poultry, tens of thousands of elephant seals and sea lions, about 1,000 people and many other mammals and wild birds.

Pinnipeds, which include seals and sea lions, have been hit unusually hard by the virus.

H5N1 Causes Die-off of Antarctic Skuas, a Seabird

Julian Johnson’s Big Year of Birding

Julian Johnson didn’t even consider himself a birder until a couple of years ago, but the 51�ԹϺ�� Davis undergraduate student broke the Yolo County Big Year record for birding in 2025. He recorded 275 species while spending more than 1,000 hours birdwatching in the country last year. His achievement came just months after a 51�ԹϺ�� Davis team broke the” Big Day” record for Yolo County.

As climate change increases the frequency of droughts, 51�ԹϺ��LA and 51�ԹϺ�� Davis researchers found one overlooked side effect: People report more conflicts with wildlife during drought, when resources are scarce.

For every inch that annual rainfall decreases, scientists found a 2% to 3% increase in reported clashes with a variety of carnivores during drought years, according to a paper published today, Nov. 12, in the journal Science Advances.
