For every bad thing happening in the world, there are good people trying to make things right. Sometimes they even win. That’s why I’m starting a new series on this blog called “Tell Me Something Good.”

I’m opening it up with Carson Jeffres, a 51�ԹϺ�� Davis Center for Watershed Sciences researcher who helped inspire the idea, simply by telling me something good. I needed to hear it. Maybe you do, too.

Nigiri Project Mixes Salmon and Rice Fields for Fifth Year on Floodplain

Experiment shows how floodplains can benefit both farms and fish. Farmland can act as surrogate wetlands for salmon and be managed to mimic the Sacramento River's natural annual flooding cycle. This year, the project will compare food web productivity and fish growth in three kinds of river habitat.

From a fish-eye view, rice fields in California’s Yolo Bypass provide an all-you-can-eat bug buffet for juvenile salmon seeking nourishment on their journey to the sea. That’s according to a new report detailing the scientific findings of an experiment that planted fish in harvested rice fields earlier this year, resulting in the fattest, fastest-growing salmon on record in the state’s rivers.
