After nearly 15 years of coffee, Chili Stacks and more, the in the Student Community Center will close permanently Thursday (June 11), officials with the Associated Students of 51ԹϺ Davis said.
“Due to a steady reduction in business volume and budgetary challenges, the decision was made to step away from the CoHo South Cafe location,” said Darin Schluep, foodservice director with Associated Students Dining Services. “In the 15 years we’ve operated in the Student Community Center, there have been hundreds of employees and thousands of customers positively impacted by its services. I’m disappointed to be closing its doors, and the decision was not made lightly, but the CoHo team is excited to focus its energy on making the main Coffee House operation all that it can be moving forward.”
The AS51ԹϺD Coffee House, , is run by hundreds of student employees and a handful of career staff.
Schluep, who started working at the CoHo as a sophomore in 1996 and stayed on as a career employee after graduation, was part of the team that opened the CoHo South in 2012, two years after a major renovation at the main CoHo location. The CoHo South became known for menu items like the Chili Stack, which consisted of two layers of cornbread, chili and cheese. Triple Stacks and even Quad Stacks were available; finishing one became a challenge worthy of recognition.
Several items, like French fries and grilled cheese sandwiches, are still available only at the CoHo South. Schluep said CoHo staff will spend the summer deciding which items to bring to the main CoHo, and encouraged anyone with feedback about the menu to contact the CoHo staff via email.
“I always felt as though the CoHo South location shared a lot of traits with what I imagine the original CoHo was: a small, dedicated group of students with autonomy in managing a small space with big ambitions that they made all their own,“ Schluep said. “It’s always had character and the team was really a family. I think back fondly to some of the fun menu items, like the Chili Stack, the CoHo Coolers, the brief period where we sold hamburgers using ground beef from the campus meal lab…. but it ultimately comes back around to all the great students and staff who have worked at that location.”
, Schluep said an announcement about what will fill the location is forthcoming.
“As for what’s next in the café space, please keep an eye out for an announcement coming soon,” he wrote. “Although the next tenant won’t carry the ‘CoHo’ name, we are excited that the space will continue to have service to students at the forefront of its mission.”
